In 1816 a young boy by the name of James Smith was born in Edinbugh. When James grew up he had an adventurist spirit and emigrated to the United States of America the year was 1841. In America he served as an apprentice in a metal work business in New Orleans. It was here he learned to manufacture cast Irion stoves. When he served his time he decided to open his own business producing stoves in Jacksonville Mississippi. He eventually he returned to Scotland for his new wife. Unfortunately on their return to US the climate in the southern state didn’t suit his ne wife’s health so they decided to return to Scotland.
In 1854 having handed over the American business to his youngest brother Robert James returned to Scotland and open Smith & Wellstood with a good friend Stephen Wellstood. The name ESSE was created a British Business Legacy was created.
In the late 1800s the Victorian Houses of Edinburg were filled with ESSE stoves.
Some vary famous historical figures were were passionate about Esse Cooker. Florence Nightingale was so passionate about ESSE cookers and would use no other brand at her hospital in Balaclava.
The world famous British explorers, Shackleton and Scott, also relied on ESSE to provide hot food and warmth to their expedition team in some of the world’s coldest and most inhospitable places. This tradition is followed by top British climber Alan Hinkes, who uses a specially adapted ESSE Solo to heat his base camp in the Himalayas.
